Together we are reshaping the narrative for men!
After last year’s succesful workshop, Deloitte Cyprus and the Cyprus Institute for Emotion-Focused Therapy (CiEFT) continued their collaboration for the second consecutive year, hosting a Men’s Day workshop led by one of the clinical psychologists of the centre, Dr. Ioannis Mavrommatis. The session focused on men and emotional intelligence, addressing an often overlooked aspect of corporate mental health and psychological safety in the workplace.
International Men’s Day is a global awareness day for many issues that men face, including abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence, celebrated annually on 19 November. For decades, the phrase “man up” has reinforced emotional suppression. At CiEFT, we are reshaping this narrative, by changing the message and inviting men to huMAN up by recognising, expressing, and valuing their emotional lives.
We are proud to have leading organisations partnering with us in this mission.
Understanding Men’s Emotional Lives
In many cultures, men are frequently taught to “be strong” and avoid emotional expression. The workshop explored how these messages contribute to: emotional suppression, increased stress or irritability, difficulty naming or expressing feelings, avoidance of vulnerability and support, and higher risk for depression and suicide among men.
Using Emotion-Focused Therapy evidence-based theory, Dr. Mavrommatis helped participants understand how emotions operate as internal signals, the impact of emotional avoidance, and why men often mask vulnerable emotions with anger, unhelful action, or withdrawal.
Creating Safe Emotional Spaces at Work
Participants engaged in reflective exercises and open discussion, building awareness of their emotional patterns and how these have been shaped by cultural and societal expectations. The session provided a supportive space for men to speak openly about emotional experiences—reinforcing that emotional awareness is essential for healthy living and well-being.
Setting a New Standard for Corporate Mental Health in Cyprus
This renewed collaboration demonstrates a growing recognition among organisations that employee mental health, emotional intelligence, and psychological safety are crucial for long-term productivity and organisational resilience.
CiEFT is proud to support Deloitte in fostering an emotionally healthy work culture where mental well-being is treated as essential, not optional.
